"The Image of You": Exploring Nursing Stereotypes

A fresh look at the stereotypical nurse for the 21st century, our enlightened age of social media and You Tube, discovers that the more things change the more they stay the same! Surprise - surprise! A research study called "The image of you: Constructing nursing identities in You Tube", published  in the August 2012 issue of the Journal of Advanced Nursing, concluded that while there are some favourable portrayals in the media of the capable, clinically decisive, professional nurse, there are all too many derogatory representations.

"Nursing professional bodies were called on to act to protect the profession from unduly immoderate representations of the nurse and to support nurses in their efforts to maximize opportunities afforded by YouTube to promote a counter discourse."

Computer Game Helps Novice Nurses Adjust

"Your Future in Nursing" is an interactive video game of real-life nursing scenarios designed to help new nurses transition from the classroom to hospital rooms!

"One of the greatest challenges facing the nursing profession is helping new RN graduates acclimate to the real world of healthcare delivery and thus, reduce the turnover rate for entry-level nurses," said Diane Mancino (NSNA). "This new program will help develop new nurses' communication skills which are critical in their first work experience. It will foster the transition from the nursing student to the staff nurse, improve interaction with co-workers and interdisciplinary staff, and increase job satisfaction."

The new program was unveiled at the National Student Nurses' Association (NSNA) Convention [April 7-11, 2010 in Orlando]. Click on the post title to download the game from the Discover Nursing website.

Champion Nursing in America

A new website has been launched by The Center to Champion Nursing in America, with the stated purpose and goal: "To ensure every American has access to a highly-skilled nurse, when and where they need one." Another important goal for the Center is to work to "increase funding to expand nursing education" and "decrease turnover among new nursing graduates".
The Center is a joint initiative of AARP, the AARP Foundation and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
